A close view of the boulders at Koekohe Beach, exposed by wave action.
The boulders are riddled with large cracks called septaria that radiate outward from a hollow core lined with calcite crystals. The processes that created septaria within the Moeraki Boulders remain an unresolved matter.
The composition of the Moeraki Boulders is virtually identical to septarian concretions that have been found in sedimentary rocks elsewhere in New Zealand, in the Kimmeridge and Oxford Clays of England, and at many other locations worldwide.

@Steyn: Thanks Steyn. There were boulders in all stages on the beach from totally intact like these to others that had cracked open and were in pieces. Our natural world, endlessly fascinating.
